University of Virginia (often abbreviated as UVA or Virginia) is a public institution that was founded in 1819.It is located in Charlottesville. Monroe owned the initial site of the University， which was mostly farmland. His law office and farmhouse are now the site of Brown College at Monroe Hill， a residential college at UVA.Tucked in the foothills of Virginia"s Blue Ridge Mountains， Charlottesville is only partly known for being the home of the University of Virginia and American icon Thomas Jefferson. Freshmen， sophomores， juniors， and seniors are instead called first-， second-， third-， and fourth-years in order to reflect Jefferson"s belief that learning is a never-ending process， rather than one to be completed within four years. For today"s students， its relaxed atmosphere， coupled with a diverse population， makes it one of the best places in the United States to pursue higher education. UVA has the only university campus in the United States that is designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (Nations Educational， Scientific and Cultural Organization).

System： The University of Virginia comprises nine schools ，including Curry(founded with two professorships in 1905)， McIntire School of Commerce(founded in 1921)， Darden Graduate School of Business Administration(founded in 1954)， School of Engineering and Applied Science， School of Law， and School of Medicine， and offers its students a choice of almost fifty bachelor"s degrees， more than ninety master"s degrees， and fifty-five Ph.D. degrees. Student life： Life at the university is unique and can be quite interesting. The prominent role that history plays in student life and on campus is written into the school"s early beginnings in 1819. From stylish performance venues to exciting sporting events， students of the University of Virginia are never at a loss for things to do. University of Virginia students are known for being active outside of the classrooms， too. The university has sent a notable number of student workers to the Peace Corps and its many programs offer students a myriad of opportunities to volunteer in areas such as housing improvement， tutoring， and fighting against hunger.
