Presently they came to a padded cell，in which could be heard a raging roar as of a wild beast．
“That’s the other man.”said the attendant.

一群游客被领着参观一所疯人院。在院子里他们遇见一个人，他长着一双疯狂的眼睛，头发蓬乱，正狂热地设法逮住苍蝇，把它们装在他的口袋里。
“他的病很惨。”陪同人说。“在他当兵打仗的时候，他的妻子抛下他的家和另一个男人私奔了。”
“真可怕。”一个游客说。
不久他们来到一间安上软垫的小屋前，听见里面传出野兽般的怒吼。
“这就是那另一个男人。”陪同人说。
Changed to Tyre
A man was mending a street lamp when he saw a pretty young woman and three children get into a car which was in the garden of a house near him．He saw that the car had a flat tyre and tried to warn the woman，but it was too late—she was already driving the car out of the garden and into the busy street．When she had got there，she stopped the car at the side of the street，got out and looked at the flat tyre．The children stayed in the car．
Very soon another car stopped，and the driver offered to help her．The young woman accepted his offer，and the man changed the tyre for her．
When she had thanked him and he had gone，she drove the car back into the garden，got out with the children and went back to her work in the house—with clean hands．
换轮胎
一个男人正在修理街上的路灯，突然看见一个漂亮的少妇和三个孩子上了一辆停在附近一户人家的庭园里的轿车。他看到有一个轮胎瘪了，他想要提醒那个少妇，但是来不及了——她已经将车开出了庭园，开到了车辆来往频繁的街道上。当她开到街道上后，她在路边停了车，下车来瞧着瘪了的轮胎。孩子们仍待在车里。不一会儿，又有一辆车停了下来，开车的人主动提出帮她的忙。少妇同意了，这个男人就为她换上了轮胎。
她道过谢后，这个男人就开车走了。于是她将车开回庭园，和孩子们一起下了车，然后回到屋里去干她的家务活——一双手干干净净的。
The Confucian Moralist
Once upon a time there was a Confucian Confucian moralist who，when in the street，walked with carefully measured steps．One day it suddenly began raining cats and dogs and following the crowd，he ran along hastily．
After running for a while，the moralist came to realize that he was careless about his manner and said，“Running is undignified．A gentleman corrects mistakes regretfully if he has made any．”
So he returned in the rain to the place where he had begun running，and then walked along gently and slowly．
道学先生
道学先生迈着八字步在大街上行走时，天下起了大雨，他也跟众人急匆匆地跑起来。
跑了一阵子，他猛然省悟到举止有失检点。便懊悔地说：“跑有失尊严，君子有过则改！”
于是他冒着雨退回起跑处，然后斯斯文文地、慢慢地向前走去。
A Foolish Young Man
An old man died and left his son a lot of money.But the son was a foolish young man，and he quickly spent all the money，so that soon he had nothing left.Of course，when that happened，all his friends left him.When he was quite poor and alone，he went to see Nasreddin，who was a kind，clever old man and often helped people when they had troubles.
“My money has finished and my friends have gone.”said the young man.“What will happen to me now？”
“Don’t worry，young man.”answered Nasreddin.“Everything will soon be all right again.Wait，and you will soon feel much happier.”
The young man was very glad.“Am I going to get rich again then？”he asked Nasreddin.
“No，I didn’t mean that.”said the old man.“I meant that you would soon get used to being poor and to having no friends.”
一个愚蠢的年轻人
一位老人死后给他的儿子留下了一大笔钱。但这个儿子是个愚蠢的年轻人，他很快就把钱全部花光，结果一无所有。当然，这个时候，他的朋友也就全都离开他了。在他非常贫穷和孤独的时候，他去找纳斯瑞丁去了。纳斯瑞丁是位和蔼、聪明的老人，常常在人们有困难时帮助他们。

A Naughtynaughty and Clever Boy
A young boy was playing a ball in the street.He kicked the ball so hard that it broke the window of a house and fell inside.A lady came to the window with the ball and shouted at the young boy.The boy ran away.
A few minutes later he returned and knocked at the door of the house.When the lady answered it，he said，“My father will come and fix your window very soon.”
After a few more minutes a man came to the door，tools in hand.The lady let the boy take his ball away.When the man finished fixing the window，
he said to the lady，“That will cost you exactly ten dollars.”
“But aren’t you the father of that young boy？”the woman asked，looking surprised.“No，”he answered equally surprised.“But aren’t you his mother？”

一个小男孩在街上踢球，他踢得太猛以致把一间房子的窗子打破了，球掉进了人家的房间里。一位太太拿着球来到窗前对小孩大叫，那男孩跑开了。
几分钟以后，他回来敲敲那家门，当那太太出来开门时，他说：“我爸爸马上来修理你的窗子。”又过了几分钟，一个人带着工具来了，那太太让小孩把球拿走了。
当那人修完了窗子，对太太说：“刚好要付十个美元。”
“难道你不是那小孩的父亲？”那女人很惊奇地问。“不，”他也同样惊奇地问，“难道你不是她母亲吗？”
A Miser
There was a miser who never entertained any guests．One day his nextdoor neighbour used his place to hold a party，some people hearing of this asked the miser’s servant，“Is it true that your master is really going to entertain guests？”
“If you think my master is going to entertainentertain guests，well，you’ll just have to wait until the next life．”
A few days later the miser after hearing about what the servant had said，poured out a stream of abuseabuse ，“Who allowed you to ask that fellow to have dinner in my home in the next life？”
吝啬鬼
过去有一个从不请客的吝啬鬼。一天邻居借用他的房子宴请宾客，有人来问吝啬鬼的仆人：“你的主人是果真要请客吃饭吗？”
那仆人说：“你想要我家主人请客，那就等到下辈子吧！”
几天后，吝啬鬼知道了仆人讲过的这句话，就不依不饶地骂道：“谁准许你答应那家伙下辈子来我家吃饭！？”
A New Captain
Many years ago，Wonder Air was a small，very new company．It had very little money and its aeroplanes were very old．Mr．Black flew by Wonder Air once．That day，he went to the airport，got on the Wonder Air aeroplane and waited．
After a few minutes，there was a lot of noise，and then the captain came out and shouted，“I’m not going to take this aeroplane up！One of the engines is broken，and they aren’t going to get a new one．”
The passengers got out，and then，an hour later，an airhostess said，“The aeroplane’s ready again now．”The passengers walked past her to the aeroplane again．
“Did you get a new engine？”Mr．Black asked the airhostess．
“No，we got a new captain.”she answered.
新机长
许多年前，奇迹航空公司是一家刚刚成立的小企业。公司只有极少的资金和几架破烂不堪的旧飞机。有一次，布莱克先生乘坐奇迹航空公司的飞机。那天，他去了机场，登上奇迹航空公司的飞机，等候起飞。
几分钟之后，响起了一阵吵闹声。然后机长走出来，大声嚷道：“我不会把这架飞机开上天的！一个引擎坏了，而他们却不给换新的。”
乘客们下了飞机，然后，一小时之后，一位空中小姐说：“现在飞机又准备起飞了。”乘客们再一次经过她的身边登上飞机。
“你们换上新引擎了吗？”布莱克先生问那位空中小姐。
“不，我们换了一个新机长。”她回答。
