Purdue University， located in West Lafayette， Indiana， is the flagship university of the six-campus
Purdue University system.Purdue was founded on May 6， 1869， as a land-grant university.The General Assembly established the institution in Tippecanoe County as Purdue University， in the name of the principal benefactor，business leader and philanthropist John Purdue. Purdue issued its first degree， a Bachelor of Science in chemistry， in 1875. The first female students were admitted to the university in the fall of the same year. West Lafayette， Indiana， serves as the primary campus in the Purdue University system， which encompasses four other campuses throughout the state.Purdue University is best known for its highly competitive engineering college and leading programs in aviation and aerospace.Today， Purdue enrolls the largest student body of any university in Indiana and the largest international student population of any public university in the United States. The Discovery Park (to bring innovation through multidisciplinary action)and Purdue Research Park(which is a private and nonprofit foundation created to assist Purdue ) surrounding campus are home to hundreds of medical， biotechnology， and nanotechnology laboratories and companies.

System： Purdue offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in over 211 major areas of study， and is well known for its competitive engineering curricula. Purdue"s aviation technology program remains one of the most competitive aviation-specific programs in the world. Purdue is organized into ten colleges and schools， including College of Agriculture， Krannert School of Management， College of Science， College of Engineering， College of Pharmacy， College of Education， College of Liberal Arts， College of Technology， College of Veterinary Medicine， College of Health and Human Sciences. Purdue"s engineering program has also educated 22 of America"s astronauts， including Neil Armstrong and Eugene Cernan who were the first and last astronauts to have walked on the moon， respectively.
