巴特比（Justin Long贾斯廷·朗饰演）即将高中毕业，他投出的八封大学入学申请函全部遭到了拒绝。面对父母施加的巨大压力，巴特比和几个面临同样问题的好友在对“自由主义”一词做出广义解释之后，租下了一所废弃医院，决定在此建立一所压根不存在的“南哈蒙理工学院”，还建立了该校的网站，给自己发出录取通知，借此竟然成功地蒙骗了父母。他们欣喜不已，不料意想不到的事情发生。由于学校网站设置的疏漏，除了他们几个以外，上百个曾被大学拒绝的高中生也通过向该网发出申请得到了“录取通知”。他们拎着大包小包来到这所“南哈蒙理工学院”的门口，准备在这个仅有一座两层小楼的虚拟大学里学习生活。面对隔壁正规大学的学生投来的蔑视眼神，本想放弃的巴特比和他的朋友们决心假戏真做。他们开始不断完善这所大学的功能，同时和那些慕名而来的学习者们互相鼓励，共同成长，努力把这所冒牌大学变成一所真正的大学。尽管最后真相大白，但所有人在这个过程中都有了不小的收获，而巴特比所做出的努力，也最终得到了父母和心上人的理解和肯定，得到了一份与众不同的“录取通知书”。
这部青春洋溢的喜剧片给观众传达了一个重要的人生哲理：在漫漫人生道路上，能被理想的大学录取固然值得庆幸，但即使没考上大学，也不代表将来永远是一个loser（失败者）。只要心中怀有理想，不断努力，终能获得成功。

Bartleby opened the letter to him in the letter box，only to find he was rejected by the local state university he had applied for.Disappointed and frustrated，he went up to his sister’s bedroom for comfort.
Bartleby：I can’t believe I didn’t get into State！I wasn’t even aiming high with that one.That was my fallback1！It was my safety school，my fail-safe2！
Lizzie：Maybe you’re just too average.
Bartleby：Hey，time out3.Too average？Okay.Okay.Excuse me，Lizzie.R-R-Remember who you’re talkin’to here.I didn’t have to go to gym4 class for a whole year’cause I claimed to be allergic5 to sweat.Or what about the time I got the note from my doctor saying I was nocturnal6 and I was allowed to study in my dreams？I got the school bully7，Frank Daley，kicked out for two years because he was sexually harassing8 me by pushing me up against the locker9 and I said I felt something.I mean，come on.That was pure genius.
Lizzie：Maybe if you didn’t write an essay called“I Don’t Have a Clue10.”
Bartleby：Well，it’s true.You know？I don’t have a clue what I want to do with the rest of my life.Lizzie：Mom and Dad are gonna kill you.
Bartleby：O ye of little faith.They’re not gonna kill me.
Lizzie：Uh-huh？
Bartleby：I just have to spin11 it and put it in terms they can understand.

Jack：I don’t understand.
