Statue 38：China Blue

To the poet Bei Dao
这些沉睡600年的瓷片
These tiles that have been in slumber for 600years
在我的眼中鲜活起来
Become alive in my eyes
一片又一片不规则的青花瓷
Pieces of irregular blue and white porcelain
睡在印度洋底500年
Have slept at the bottom of the Indian Ocean for 500hundred years
躺在印巴商人的麻袋里100年
And lain in the gunny sacks of Indian and Pakistani merchants
一直？在等待着
Waiting all along
我来认领
To be taken by me
600年前郑和下西洋时丢掉的孩子呵
Those children left behind by Zheng He 600years ago
我和我的国家的孩子
I and the children of my country
一直在印度洋底流浪
Are wandering in the middle of the Indian Ocean all along
一直在印巴商人的交易中流浪
And in the transaction between Indian and Pakistani merchants
一晃就是600年
600hundred year in a flash
现在我就是这些迷失的孩子的
Now I am the only relative of these lost children
唯一亲人？与中国相距万里的拉姆小岛
Lamu island is ten thousand miles away from China
只有我一个持中国护照的中国人
There is only one Chinese with Chinese passport
印巴商人告诉我？这种破碎的瓷片
Indian and Pakistani merchants tell me that those broken ceramic chips
叫中国蓝？我说她的名字就叫中国
Are named China blue，I say her name is China
CHINA？瓷？明白吗？
China porcelain，understand？
这时我把腰杆挺的很直
By now I stand upright
很礼貌的和那个印巴商人说
To tell the Indian-Pakistani merchant politely that
你们眼中的中国蓝？我的孩子
The China blue reflected in your eyes，is my children
今天？我就要带她们回家
Today，I will bring them home

一只鸟？立在荒原上
A bird standing in the wasteland
我是说一只？生长在非洲的一种
I mean one that lives in Africa
叫鹈鹕的大嘴鸟？长长的腿
Named the pelican with a big mouth and long legs
红而挂满白色的鳞片？
Red in color with white scales
长而巨大的喙？看样子可以撑船
The long and big beak looks capable of punting a boat
这是小雨季后期的荒原
This is the wasteland at the end of the rainy season
草是青的？但草尖处有点儿黄
The grass is green with a little yellow on the top
水？一汪又一汪
Water，a body and another of water
不会转弯的水？镜子一样躺在洼处
Water without curves lies in an underwater cave like a mirror
一如想爱和想被爱的女子
Just like a girl wanting to love and to be loved
洗净了身子裸睡的模样
Sleeps naked after taking a bathe
鸟对我说？在空中
The bird says to me that in the air
我以为那是河
I thought that was a river
但现在我很失望
But now I am very disappointed
那只是一汪又一汪没有连起来的水
That was only a body and another of water unconnected
那？那真的不是河？
That was not a river at all
我知道会转弯的水里才有鱼
I know that only the curved water has fish in it
这水？要是河就会转弯了
The water can surely curve if it is a river

误入从林深处
Going astray among the deep jungle
才知道什么叫怕
I know now what fear is
天上飞的？地上跑的
Those flying in the sky and running on the ground
树上爬的？一切敌视的目光
Crawling in trees，all in hostile eyes
比刀还犀利的逼向你
Approach you sharper than knives
侵略者？两条腿的人
Invader，man with two legs
我和我的同伴
My companion and I
时时都感到恐怖的存在
Can feel the horror at every moment
当然这些匕首一样的目光
Surely the dagger-like eyes
还不至于让我们惊吓得浑身发软
Cannot go so far as to frighten us flaccid all over
我们都清楚的知道
We all clearly know that
先入为主的道理？知道先入者的
Whosoever enters first is master and their
种种特权？我们感到更可怕的是枪
Privileged rights，what we are more scared of is the gun
持枪者？也许就站在我们的背后
Gun bearers may stand behind us
