Driving to work, I saw a brown dog, with a red rope tied around his neck, going down the street. He was, to say it kindly, very ordinary.
He got in the car without so much as a look backward.1
I put up the necessary “Found” signs with Reds face plastered1 all over town. I called the pound to see if anyone had reported a missing dog. I tried to get rid of him. I even offered money: lots of it. There was no use.
Weeks passed. Months passed.
2 If I got up in the middle of the night, he was there. He loved to take my shoes, Tshirts and hairbrushes, and put them all over the house. He liked to be loved, but not too much. 3 Thats right-he made his way into sleeping with me.
In short, he was your average, typical dog. Reds traits2-average and typical3-were just what Id been running from all my life. Like Red, I was just an average girl growing up in Southern California. I had no distinguishing4 traits. I was common. Before Red walked into my life, Id tried to keep myself off “common” in a big way. 4
Red is now Red. Red is necessary. But most of all, Red has given a new meaning of the word “average”. I am now proud to think of myself as a common woman in her middle years living with Red and feeling better for it.
Think of how many Reds are walking down streets, ready to change your life. 5 Think of what youre missing.
